    A Commitment To

Barr is a Compact Signer for the 100% Talent Compact, which is administered by the Boston Women’s Workforce Council, a unique public-private partnership between the Boston Mayor’s Office and Greater Boston employers dedicated to eliminating the gender and racial wage gap. We are proud to be part of this first-in-the-nation approach to reaching pay equity for women and people of color across our region.

The Importance of Candid Feedback

Why we seek (and share) feedback from grantees on what it’s like to work with us.

At Barr, there's more support than I've ever experienced in a workplace. Yes, some of that comes with our financial resources, but it's more so part of the culture of support for each other as people.

Reflections on Joining Barr in an All-Remote Context

Work Environment

We embrace a hybrid workplace that seeks to balance time in the office with colleagues, time in the community, and remote work.

Our current approach centers trust and flexibility with a minimum of eight in-person days per month, including occasional required all-staff days.

Located along the waterfront in Boston’s North End, Barr’s offices are in the historic Pilot House and adjacent Two Atlantic Avenue. Our walls and halls feature the work of living, contemporary artists, and the office space is designed to provide bright, open, flexible spaces for collaboration and independent work, and to host meetings and events. With expansive views of Boston Harbor, Barr is steps away from Boston’s “Freedom Trail” and bike share and near restaurants, shops, museums, and parks.

“Culture is not stagnant. Culture is something that everybody in the organization helps to shape and contributes to.”

Benefits

Barr offers generous benefits including health, dental, vision, and life insurance; a strong retirement savings program; 15 vacation days to start; and noteworthy parental and health leave policies.

Health Leave

Having the flexibility to take care of yourself and your loved ones’ physical and mental health is important for the well-being of all staff, and ultimately the overall health of staff. As a result, upon employment, all employees are eligible to use paid health leave as needed.  We have shifted from an annual allotment of “sick days” to this broader approach, to be inclusive of the ways in which we define “health,” to permit this time to be used to support both employees and their care for their loved ones, and to remove any unnecessary focus on “saving up” sick days for unexpected circumstances.

Parental Leave

We aim to support staff members during the significant, life-altering event of welcoming a new child into their family, whether by adoption, giving birth, or surrogacy. We recognize the importance for parents of all genders to have time to bond with their children and establish new routines for themselves and their families in a way that supports their work/life balance and the quality of their work.

Staff members who have been employed for at least 90 days and who work at least 20 hours a week are eligible for 12 weeks of paid parental leave of absence (“Parental Leave”) at full salary for the purpose of bonding and caring for a newly born or newly adopted child under the age of 18 or under the age of 23 if the child has a mental or physical disability. In cases involving multiple births, and in accordance with Massachusetts statues, Barr provides 8 weeks of paid time off per child.

Parents physically giving birth to a child are eligible for an additional six weeks (or eight weeks in the case of a Cesarean delivery) of paid leave to physically recover from pregnancy and medical event of giving birth.

Retirement

Barr's 401(k) Plan provides each eligible employee with a unique opportunity to save for their future. Barr provides a 3% fixed employer contribution and a 150% matching contribution up to 9% of the employee’s salary.

Holidays

There are generally 13 paid holidays per year where Barr's office is officially closed: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Patriots Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day (also known as Columbus Day), the week of Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and Day before or after Christmas.

PHA appreciates and respects diverse backgrounds, and encourages people to celebrate their ethnic, religious, or personal beliefs in the ways they see fit. Staff are permitted to make adjustments to these days if they celebrate differently from the organization's official holiday calendar.  In addition, there are two flexible/floating holidays available to staff member to use as they wish each calendar year.

Matching Gift Program

As an extension of the Barr Foundation’s philanthropic mission, we offer a matching gift program for all full‐time employees. Personal gifts of $50 or more will be matched 3:1, with a maximum of $15,000 from the Foundation per employee.

Vacation Time

Barr believes that vacation is important to the health and well-being of our employees and encourages all employees to utilize their vacation days.

Vacation is an earned benefit and our goal is to empower staff to use their time and reduce uncertainty in asking for or using vacation time. Our vacation policy seeks to balance meeting the requirements of the job and providing employees with the structure needed to use their time. We also seek to ensure that across all departments the vacation policy is applied equitably, fairly, consistently, and with humanity and support for everyone.

Upon employment, Barr provides employees with 15 days of paid vacation if you work at least 20 hours a week. Full-time employees will accumulate vacation days on a monthly basis based on years of service. The increase in vacation days takes place annually on the date of your employment anniversary.Â
